Federal Citizenship-Documentation Legislation

Congress has considered federal legislation that would require documentary proof of United States citizenship for voter registration in federal elections. The SAVE America Act passed the U.S. House of Representatives in February 2026 but, as of August 12, 2026, has not passed the Senate and is not current nationwide law. Existing voter-registration and identification requirements vary by state. Voters should follow instructions from their official state or local election office.
